Rainfall floods kills six people in Somaliland

At least six people are confirmed dead, nine are injured while six others remains missing in Dila, Awdal region of Somaliland as floods triggered by torrential rains swept away houses across the city, officials said on Thursday.

Mohamoud Ali Sulaiman, Awdal region’s governor told the media that the six dead people are mostly adults, while the rescue teams are searching for the missing people those are believed to be swept away by the floods.

Dila Floods“Most injuries during floods that require urgent medical attention were taken to Borama General Hospital where their situation is being handled,” said the governor, “The main cause of the death during the floods was drowning,” he added.

Despite these raining days, Somaliland has been suffering from droughts for the past three years that led the death of almost 10 people and the displacement of other million and half people. Awdal and Selel regions, west of the country are the most devastated areas, where the death has occurred. In addition, in these areas, the carcasses of starved livestock were everywhere.

During the droughts, the locals has been collecting funds from every citizen, the urban areas in particular to help those in need in the rural areas.
